January 25 & 26, 2011

Civic Center Park
Downtown Denver

The final element is now in place.  In 2010 Denver became ground zero for the winter sports world as the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) “Snow Show” moved the industry’s preeminent annaul exposition to the Colorado Convention Center.  Now the consumer can join in on the excitement of snow sports and passion for outdoor living with the addition of Denver Big Air.

On January 25th and 26th, preceding the SIA Snow Show as well as the annual X Games in Aspen, skiers and snowboarders will be soaring into the nighttime sky in downtown Denver’s Civic Center Park off one of the biggest man-made ramps ever constructed.  A collaborative venture of the Metro Denver Sports Commission, the City of Denver and the U. S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), and the International Ski Federation (FIS), Denver Big Air presented by Sprint is a two day international ski and snowboarding event.

The event opens with the Nature Valley Big Air Challenge, a USSA skiing big air event on Tuesday, Jan. 25 featuring some of the best male skiers in the country.

Day two, Wednesday, Jan. 26, action will feature the International Ski Federation’s (FIS) LG FIS World Cup Snowboard Big Air, a sanctioned event on the established global snowboarding circuit with an international roster of the top male snowboarders from around the world.

A Mile High Snowfest

Denver Big Air is the cornerstone of the Mile High Snowfest, a week of winter themed activities centered around the SIA Snow Show, one of the biggest industry trade shows in the world. Taking place at the Colorado Convention Center from Thursday, January 27th through Sunday, January 30th, the SIA Snow Show brings nearly $30 million dollars and 20,000 visitors to Denver. With an average of 75% of the snow sports retail buying power in attendance, the Snow Show is the largest, most concentrated and authentic trade event in the snow sports industry.

To be broadcast nationally Sunday, January 30, 2011 on NBC and Versus, the intense action of a spectator event like the Denver Big Air will offer the people of Colorado a great chance to share in a weeklong celebration of winter sports right in the heart of Denver. It is the first time for this event in the United States on a ramp this size and with the setting in Downtown Denver.

The LG FIS World Cup Snowboard Big Air has been held in Moscow, Barcelona, Quebec, Seoul and London and is making its first stop in the United States. The FIS’ selection of Denver as the first U.S. host city fits in its strategy of iconic locations for its signature ramp.

To complement the snowboarding action, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, the national governing body for the sport in the U.S., will add the Nature Valley Big Air Challenge, a big air ski event to the mix to kickoff two-night stand on Tuesday, Jan. 25. And will include Denver’s own Bobby Brown, the reigning X Games big air champion.

Reaching the Ideal Audience

The Denver Big Air competition is expected to attract 50,000 spectators comprised of two very different but highly desirable audiences:

  • General Spectators dominated by Gen X & Y members who crave the adrenalin charged stunts and mind blowing tricks of the competition.
  • Denver corporate leaders and winter sports industry decision makers and influencers who will be congregating in Denver to conduct business at the SIA Snow Show.

A Colossus Centerpiece

Denver Big Air will feature one of the largest man-made ski ramps ever constructed. The ramp is a combination of the steel truss and scaffolding that will be 101 feet high, 300 feet long and 80 feet wide and will face toward the City and County Building. The structure has been designed by Populous, a Denver based venue designer and event overlay firm with credentials that span from the Olympics to the FIFA World Cup.

Around the ramp centerpiece, Denver Big Air’s event footprint will include a variety of areas for viewing and consumer interaction including:

  • Public viewing area (capacity 10,000 nightly)
  • Reserved up-close viewing (capacity 12,000 nightly)
  • Corporate Hospitality Village with premium viewing full catering (capacity 1,200 nightly)
  • Food Court (Food, beer and beverage sales area in spectator area)
  • Winter Sports Expo located in Greek Amphitheater at principal spectator entrance to Civic Center Park
